Power Versus Empower

How do you gain your authority as a leader? What actions do you take to get work accomplished? What do you do differently when the pressure is on you?

Do you lead from a place of POWER, using your positional power to get things done? As a leader you have it, but it is how you use it that is important. Leading from a place of power is using authority to get things done, always directing your employees by telling them what and how to do things. I would consider this type of leadership, "command and control", a style that was once practiced by many leaders. I have found that this type of leadership results in your employees being dependent on you, it stifles innovation and creativity and also diminished confidence.

Do you lead by EMPOWERING your employees, involving them and using their skills to get things done? When you lead by empowering your employees, you ask for their input, trust their ability and resist the urge to share your own opinion. When a leader empowers their employees, they tap into coaching skills to lead. When you lead using coaching tools, you will find that your employees become more capable of critical thinking, are more likely to embrace a solution mindset and are able to solve their own problems, creating independence.
