Respond don’t React

During my live session last week I had a great question - “How can I change the energy I show up with?”

Here is my answer:

Your thoughts - what you tell yourself, determine how you feel and how you feel drives the action you take and ultimately how you show up. To change how you show up, you have to first understand how your thoughts are driving your actions. Once you can do that you will be able to be more intentional about your thoughts. Changing your thoughts will allow you to change how you show up. Respond don’t react.

So what is the difference between responding and reacting? Tuning into your feelings. When you tune into your feelings you give yourself the opportunity to respond, you control your emotions. When you react, it is driven by your unconscious mind, based on your beliefs, bias, and prejudice.

We will discuss the connection between thoughts > feelings > actions more during the September live session, held the third Monday of every month at 11:00 am CST. In the meantime, try this exercise.

Here is an exercise:

This exercise will help you create awareness about the connection between your thoughts, feelings and actions. After you create awareness, you will have more control over your ability to change the thoughts that ultimately drive your actions. At least three times a day stop and take a moment to notice the following things:

1: What are you feeling?

2: Where are you feeling it?

3: What were your thoughts at the time?

It is helpful to write it down, but not required. By doing this a couple times per day you will create awareness. You should do this every day for at least two weeks.

If you are ready to take the next step in moving forward, I encourage you to learn more about coaching. Coaching works!

Are you afraid that coaching is only for executives or high potentials? Are you concerned about the cost and tell yourself only companies hire coaches? The field of coaching has broadened and while these beliefs may have been valid at one time, they are no longer true. I encourage you to learn more.
